Year-End Tax Planning for Indian Ecommerce

Year-End Tax Planning for Indian Ecommerce

Why I Treat Ecommerce Tax Planning Differently

My CA handles hundreds of clients, and most of them run traditional businesses. Over the years I've learned that ecommerce throws up tax situations that many CAs simply miss:

  • TCS credits from marketplaces — I find this sits unclaimed more often than not, tying up working capital
  • Digital marketing expenses — Meta ads, Google ads, SaaS tools — all deductible, but I see them go uncategorized more than they should
  • Inventory write-offs — I tell clients damaged or returned products can be written off, but only with proper documentation
  • GST input credit on international services — Shopify, Canva, and other foreign SaaS tools charge GST that I make sure my clients claim back

10 Tax Savings I See Most Ecommerce Sellers Miss

1. Claim All Digital Marketing Spend

  • Meta Ads, Google Ads, influencer payments — I count all of these as business expenses
  • I always tell clients to get these invoiced to the business entity, not a personal credit card
  • GST paid on domestic ad services is claimable as input credit — I make sure my clients don't leave this on the table

2. Marketplace TCS Credit

  • Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho deduct 0.5% TCS
  • This is your money — I push every client I work with to claim it in GSTR-3B
  • I break this down in our TCS reconciliation guide with the exact steps

3. SaaS Tool Expenses

  • I count Shopify subscription, email marketing tools, analytics tools, and design tools here
  • In my book, all of it is deductible as a business expense
  • If a foreign company is billing you, I'd check whether GST reverse charge applies

4. Home Office Deduction

  • If you're running the business from home, like a lot of my clients do, a portion of rent, electricity, and internet is deductible
  • I calculate it as: (workspace area / total home area) × rent/bills
  • I always tell clients to keep utility bills in their own name or the business name

5. Inventory Write-Off

  • I write off damaged, expired, or unsaleable products the same way every year
  • Document it: take photos, maintain a register of written-off items
  • I get my CA to properly account for inventory shrinkage every year

6. Depreciation on Equipment

  • Laptop, camera, packaging equipment, furniture — I depreciate all of these as business assets
  • I claim accelerated depreciation wherever it applies
  • Even the smartphone I use for the business qualifies

7. Shipping Expenses

  • All courier and logistics costs are deductible — I claim every rupee of it
  • I download annual shipping reports from Shiprocket and Delhivery to keep the documentation clean
  • RTO shipping costs are deductible too — both forward and reverse legs

8. Professional Services

  • CA fees, legal fees, consulting fees — I deduct every one of them
  • Photography and content creation for my product listings count too
  • So does web development and design work

9. Employee Benefits Under New Tax Regime

  • If you have employees, like my team does, NPS employer contribution (up to 10% of salary) is deductible for the business
  • I deduct health insurance premiums paid for my employees
  • Training and skill development expenses for my team are deductible too

10. Advance Tax Payment Optimization

  • My income is seasonal — it peaks in festive season — so I plan advance tax installments around that
  • I avoid interest on late advance tax by paying the correct estimates every quarter
  • I use festive season profits to prepay advance tax in the December quarter

My Year-End Checklist (Before March 31)

  1. ☐ I reconcile all marketplace TCS credits
  2. ☐ I verify GST input credit matches purchase invoices
  3. ☐ I document inventory write-offs with photos and records
  4. ☐ I make sure all business expenses are invoiced to the business entity
  5. ☐ I calculate the home office deduction if it applies
  6. ☐ I review advance tax payments and pay any shortfall before March 15
  7. ☐ I download annual reports from all platforms — Shopify, Amazon, Flipkart, courier partners
  8. ☐ I share all this documentation with my CA before March 20
