HSN Code Guide for Indian Ecommerce — Stop Penalties

What Are HSN Codes and Why They Matter
HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) codes are standardized codes that classify traded products. I check this on every client invoice — every product sold in India needs an HSN code on its GST invoice.
Why getting it wrong is expensive, in my experience:
- Wrong GST rate applied — I’ve seen it happen: your HSN code maps to 18% GST but you’re charging 12%, you owe the difference + interest
- Input Tax Credit blocked — I tell clients: your buyers can’t claim ITC if the HSN code is wrong on your invoice
- GST notice — In my experience, a mismatch triggers automated notices from the GST system
- Penalty — I warn founders this can run up to ₹50,000 per instance of incorrect HSN reporting
- Marketplace listing issues — I’ve seen Amazon and Flipkart increasingly validate HSN codes during listing
How to Find Your Product’s HSN Code
Method 1: GST Portal HSN Search
- I start here: go to cbic-gst.gov.in → GST Rate Finder
- Enter your product description
- Review the results — look for the most specific match (8-digit HSN is most accurate)
- Verify the GST rate matches what you’ve been charging
Method 2: Customs Tariff
- The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) maintains the complete HSN tariff — my fallback when nothing else fits
- Navigate by chapter (e.g., Chapter 61 = Knitted garments, Chapter 62 = Woven garments)
- More precise, but I won’t pretend it’s quick to navigate
Common HSN Codes for D2C Products
| Product Category | HSN Code | GST Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton t-shirts/tops (≤₹1,000) | 6109 | 5% |
| Cotton t-shirts/tops (>₹1,000) | 6109 | 12% |
| Silk sarees | 5007 | 5% |
| Leather bags/wallets | 4202 | 18% |
| Skincare (cosmetics) | 3304 | 18% |
| Organic food products | 0904-0910 | 5% |
| Handmade jewellery (imitation) | 7117 | 3% |
| Electronic accessories | 8544 | 18% |
| Fitness equipment | 9506 | 12% |
| Home decor (wooden) | 4420 | 12% |
| Scented candles | 3406 | 12% |
| Coffee/tea | 0901/0902 | 5% |
Note: GST rates and HSN classifications are updated periodically. I tell clients to verify with the latest GST rate schedule.
HSN Code Requirements by Turnover
| Annual Turnover | HSN Digits Required on Invoice |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹5 crore | 4-digit HSN code |
| Above ₹5 crore | 6-digit HSN code |
| Exports | 8-digit HSN code |
Common Mistakes I See Sellers Make
- Using generic HSN codes — I see sellers file ‘Articles of apparel’ (Chapter 62) instead of the specific ‘Men’s cotton shirts’ (6205). Be as specific as possible.
- Same HSN for all variants — I’ve flagged this: a product priced at ₹800 (5% GST) and ₹1,200 (12% GST) needs different tax treatment even if it’s the same product.
- Not updating after GST Council changes — GST rates change periodically. I check client HSN codes after every GST Council meeting.
- Ignoring marketplace validation — Amazon and Flipkart now cross-check HSN codes, and I’ve seen incorrect codes lead straight to listing suspension.
