Abandoned Cart — WhatsApp vs Email vs SMS Tested

74% of Indian ecommerce carts are abandoned. At ₹999 average order value and 1,000 abandoned carts/month, that’s nearly ₹10 lakh walking away — I watch this drain hit D2C founders every month. Cart recovery automation brings back 10-30% of it, but I wanted real numbers on which channel actually works best.
My team and I tested WhatsApp, email, and SMS recovery flows across multiple Indian D2C brands we work with. Here are the real numbers we found.
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Metric | SMS | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Open rate | 95% | 15-18% | 90%+ (declining) |
| Click-through rate | 15-25% | 2-3% | 5-8% |
| Cart recovery rate | 25-30% | 5-10% | 8-12% |
| Cost per message | ₹0.50-0.80 | ₹0.01-0.05 | ₹0.10-0.25 |
| Revenue per message | ₹15-25 | ₹1-3 | ₹3-8 |
| ROI per message | 20-50x | 20-300x | 12-80x |
| Rich media support | Images, buttons, catalogs | HTML (often broken) | Text only |
| Two-way conversation | Yes (native) | Rare | Limited |
| Best for | High-value recovery, COD conversion | Volume, low-cost nurture | Urgent reminders |
The Optimal Recovery Sequence
I never tell a founder to pick one channel — use all three in sequence for maximum recovery:
- 30 minutes: WhatsApp — “Hey [Name], you left [Product] in your cart! Complete your order: [link]” (Image of product included)
- 2 hours: Email — Subject: “Your [Product] is waiting” — includes product image, 2-3 customer reviews, and checkout link
- 6 hours: SMS — “Don’t miss out! Your [Product] cart expires soon: [short link]”
- 24 hours: WhatsApp — “Still thinking about [Product]? Here’s ₹50 off: [link with auto-applied discount]”
- 48 hours: Email — Final reminder with testimonials and urgency: “Only 3 left in stock”
Combined recovery rate with this sequence: 28-35% of abandoned carts. Compare that to 5-10% with email alone — the gap is why I never let a client rely on just one channel.
Revenue Impact Calculator
| Monthly Abandoned Carts | Recovery Rate | AOV | Monthly Recovered Revenue |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 | 30% | ₹999 | ₹1,49,850 |
| 1,000 | 30% | ₹999 | ₹2,99,700 |
| 2,500 | 30% | ₹999 | ₹7,49,250 |
| 5,000 | 30% | ₹999 | ₹14,98,500 |
Even at 500 abandoned carts/month, I’ve seen a 30% recovery rate generate ₹1.5 lakh/month in revenue that would otherwise be lost for good.
