Operator's note
Most shopifyarticles you find online are written for a US merchant on Stripe. This one is written for an Indian D2C team — where COD still drives 50–70% of orders, UPI Intent settles in seconds, RTO eats margin in Tier 2/3 lanes, and Diwali pulls a quarter's revenue into a two-week window. If a step below references a payment gateway choice, the answer isn't universal: we pick by vendor response rate, not affiliation. Razorpay, PhonePe, Easebuzz and Cashfree Payments are listed alphabetically in our docs because the right one depends on your AOV, your COD ratio, and how fast the gateway's support team replies on a Sunday at 11pm.
Follow the steps below to correctly add a new product to your Shopify store. This process ensures proper product display, pricing, tax handling, inventory tracking, and customer experience.
From the left sidebar of the Shopify dashboard, click on Products.
This is the main area where all your store products are managed.
Click the “Add product” or “+ Add product” button.
A new product creation page will open.
Add a clear and descriptive product name
Follow your brand’s naming format
Avoid spelling mistakes
Example:
Blue Kanchipuram Silk Saree with Gold Border
Write a detailed product description that includes:
What the product is
Key features and benefits
Fabric, color, size, usage, care instructions
Use bullet points for easy reading
If you are unable to write the description manually:
Click the Star (✨) icon near the Product Description section
A small popup will appear
Type a short prompt (example: “Write a product description for a blue saree”)
Press Enter
Shopify AI will generate a description
Click “Generate Again” if you want a new version
Click “Keep” if you are satisfied
Upload product images, videos, or 3D models (if available).
Best practices:
Use high-resolution images
Good lighting and clean background
Show multiple angles (front, back, close-up)
Select the most accurate Shopify Product Category using Shopify’s standard taxonomy.
This helps with:
Correct GST/tax calculations
Better product filtering
Automatic metafields support
Fill in the following fields:
Price – Selling price
Compare at price (optional) – For showing discounts
Cost per item (optional) – For profit tracking
If GST is already included in your price, untick “Charge tax on this product”
Otherwise, Shopify may add 18% tax at checkout
Enable Track quantity
Enter available stock quantity
If required, enable Continue selling when out of stock
(Use carefully to avoid overselling)
Enable SKU or Barcode and assign a unique SKU
For physical products, enter the product weight (mandatory for shipping calculations)
For digital or service products, mark accordingly
If the product has options like size, color, material, add variants.
For each variant:
Set price
Set stock quantity
Upload specific image (recommended)
If you want customers to choose variants by images:
Click the image icon next to each variant
Select the correct product image
Assign it to that color/variant
Click Done
This improves customer clarity and reduces returns.
Assign the product to all relevant collections.
Example for a blouse product:
Blouses
Women’s Tops
Ethnic Blouse Collection
This ensures the product appears in the correct sections of your website.
In the Product Organization section (top-right):
Add relevant tags
Tags help with filtering, automation, and marketing
Examples:#saree, #blue, festival, bridal, new-arrival
Best Practice:
Use the collection name as a tag unless you need variation.
Before saving, double-check:
Product title & description
Images and variant mapping
Price and tax settings
Inventory quantity
Collections and tags
Click Save
Ensure product status is Active / Published so it appears on the website
Following this SOP ensures:
Correct pricing & tax handling
Better customer experience
Fewer order issues
Clean and scalable product management
Common follow-ups
WhatsApp the support team at the link below. We reply within the hour during business hours (Mon–Fri 09:00–18:00 IST). If it's a payment-gateway or shipping issue mid-order, flag it as urgent and we move it to the top of the queue — a stuck checkout is a revenue leak, not a support ticket.
Generic Shopify docs are excellent for the global merchant. Indian ecommerce runs on different rails — UPI, COD, Shiprocket, GST invoicing, RTO mitigation by pincode — and most of that isn't in the official help centre. Our Knowledge Base is the SOP layer we wrote for our own ops team running 200+ stores; the shopify section is the part of that catalogue most relevant when you're working on what this article covers.
When the underlying tool changes — a Shopify checkout extension schema update, a payment-gateway API revision, a Shiprocket dashboard redesign, a COD app deprecation — the article changes that week, not the next quarter. If you spot something that no longer matches your screen, message us; the article gets re-recorded against the live admin within a day or two.
